To see, to perceive, to behold. In context, it carries the sense of observing something and being moved or impressed by it.

Ahaz's 'seeing' the altar in Damascus is not merely observational; it prompts action. The verb will appear again in verse 12 ('and the king saw the altar') in a frame narrative showing Ahaz both seeing the foreign altar and then using it. His sight leads to commitment.

To build, to construct, to establish. In the context of altar construction, it refers to the physical work of creating the altar according to specifications.

The verb banah normally appears in positive contexts—building the Temple, constructing God's dwelling place. Here it is used for constructing an alien altar. The word itself is neutral, but the act it describes is presented as spiritually problematic by the surrounding context.

According to all, exactly as, in complete accordance with. It indicates totality and exactitude.

The phrase 'kekhol asher shalach' emphasizes that Urijah had complete specifications from the king and followed them with precision. This is not approximation or interpretation; it is exact replication. The Temple's high priest has become a craftsman executing the king's design.

The priest, especially the high priest, who served as the religious intermediary between God and the people, responsible for maintaining the sanctity of worship and the integrity of covenant practice.

The repetition of 'Urijah the priest...Urijah the priest' in this verse emphasizes his priestly role and authority. As priest, he is the guardian of the Temple's sanctity. His compliance is therefore not merely obedience to the king, but a violation of his priestly covenant duties. A priest who allows the Temple to be desecrated has fundamentally failed in his calling.

Until the time of coming, before the arrival of. It indicates temporal priority—the altar was completed before Ahaz's return.

To offer (sacrifice), to go up (the altar steps), to ascend. The root can mean either 'to go up' or 'to offer a burnt offering' (referring to the ascending smoke of the sacrifice).

It grounds the Kings narrative in real historical documentation while reminding us that some sources of ancient wisdom are no longer available—what we have in scripture is what the Lord preserved for our spiritual edification.

He lay down with/among his fathers. Shkav means to lie down, recline, or sleep. The idiom uses sleep as a metaphor for death, emphasizing rest rather than termination.

This is the standard Hebrew euphemism for death throughout the monarchical histories, appearing for virtually every king. It carries dignity and suggests continuity with the ancestors rather than individual isolation. For covenant theology, it emphasizes that death is entry into the gathered community of the faithful (or unfaithful) ancestors. The phrase appears over 40 times in Kings and Chronicles.

He was buried with his fathers/ancestors. Qbr (to bury) emphasizes the physical disposition of the body and the connection to family burial grounds.

The phrase 'with his fathers' appears to indicate dynastic continuity and family honor—to be buried with one's ancestors in the royal cemetery was a mark of legitimate kingship. That 2 Chronicles notes Ahaz was denied this honor makes the silence of Kings about this dishonor notable. What appears to be standard royal protocol in Kings is revealed to have been violated, adding a layer of judgment to Ahaz's record.

In the city of David; Jerusalem, the royal capital, where the Davidic dynasty ruled and where the temple stood.

The 'City of David' was not just a geographical location but a theological claim—the place chosen by the Lord for his name to dwell (1 Kings 11:13, 36). All Judahite kings of this period were buried in or near Jerusalem (unless denied the honor, as in Ahaz's case). When a king does 'that which is ra,' he ruptures his fundamental obligation to rule according to God's law. The 'sight' of the Lord is omniscient and penetrating — nothing is hidden. For covenant members reading this, it is a reminder that our sins are visible to God even if hidden from human eyes.

Al means 'upon, against.' The combination describes military action with the sense of overrunning or overwhelming.

The image of 'lifting up' prayer suggests that Isaiah's intercession is an act of bringing Judah's need before God's presence. This is not a casual request but a solemn, deliberate act of intercession on behalf of the nation.

Remnant, remainder, what is left. In biblical prophecy, the 'remnant' (she'erit) refers to the small portion of the people of God who survive judgment and through whom God's covenant purposes continue.

The term she'erit appears throughout the prophetic books, especially in Isaiah and Jeremiah, as a designation for the community that will be preserved and through whom God's promises will be fulfilled. Hezekiah's use of this term affirms that Jerusalem represents the she'erit — the survivor community through whom the Davidic covenant will continue.

Servants, officials, attendants, those who serve. The term can denote both literal servants and high-ranking officials who 'serve' the king in an administrative capacity. In the case of Eliakim, Shebna, and the priests, these are important officials who represent the king's authority.

The use of avdei ('servants') for what were actually the highest officials in the kingdom emphasizes the principle that all human authority, even that of the king's most important ministers, stands in a service relationship to God. These men are servants of the king, but implicitly, they are also servants of God and come before His prophet to receive His word.

Literally, 'and they came to Isaiah.' The verb bo'a ('to go,' 'to come') is used of the servants' physical arrival at the prophet's location. There is no elaborate description of where Isaiah is or how the servants found him; the focus is simply on the fact of arrival.

The phrase 'came to Isaiah' echoes the same verb used in verse 1 when Hezekiah 'went into the house of the LORD' (vayyavo beit YHWH). Both movements — Hezekiah entering the Temple and the servants approaching the prophet — are movements toward God's presence, though through different channels. Hezekiah approaches God through the Temple; the servants approach God through the prophet. Both movements lead toward the divine word.

This is the prophetic messenger formula, the standard way a prophet introduces a direct utterance from God. It literally means 'Thus says the LORD,' and it functions as a formal certification that what follows is God's direct speech, not the prophet's own words or interpretation.

The prophetic formula koh amar YHWH appears hundreds of times in the Hebrew Bible and serves to distinguish between the prophet's own thoughts and God's direct utterance. When Isaiah uses this formula, he claims divine authority for what he is about to say. This is precisely what Hezekiah needs to hear: not Isaiah's opinion but God's own word. Notably, the Rabshakeh had also used a messenger formula in 2 Kings 18:28, introducing Sennacherib's words: 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria.' Now Isaiah uses the same formal structure to introduce God's words, creating a rhetorical contest between the word of the Assyrian king and the word of the God of Israel. God's word, introduced by the prophetic formula, is implicitly asserted as superior.

Do not fear, do not be afraid. The phrase is an imperative command to cease or refrain from fear. 'Fear' in this context can mean both emotional anxiety and a deeper sense of dread or deferential submission to a more powerful force.

The command 'al tira' is the opening word of reassurance, the fundamental consolation offered to someone in crisis. This phrase appears throughout the psalms, in the patriarchal narratives, and in the prophetic books. When God (or God's representative) says 'al tira,' He is asserting that despite appearances, He is in control and the fearful person should trust in Him. In this specific context, Hezekiah should not fear the Rabshakeh's words because God's word is greater. The command addresses the emotional and spiritual crisis directly: the inner terror that the Rabshakeh's taunt has created must be dispelled by the assurance that God stands against Assyria.

Words, utterances, matters, things. Can refer to anything from a single utterance to a body of speech or even to events and matters more broadly. In this context, it refers specifically to the Rabshakeh's taunt and threats.

By calling the Rabshakeh's message merely 'words' (davarim), Isaiah subtly diminishes their power. Words are not reality; they are claims about reality. The Rabshakeh's words claim that God cannot save — but words do not determine reality. God's word, by contrast, carries creative and redemptive power. The contrast between the empty words of the Rabshakeh and the word (davar) of God spoken through Isaiah will be central to the outcome of this crisis.

To blaspheme, revile, taunt, reproach, treat with contempt. Describes speech that shows utter disrespect and contempt for someone or something held sacred. Blasphemy against God is one of the gravest offenses in biblical theology.

The verb gadaph identifies the Rabshakeh's words as not merely political rhetoric or military threat but as blasphemy — an offense against God's character and majesty. This classification transforms the entire crisis: it is not a military or political problem primarily but a theological one — God's honor has been insulted. God will respond to the blasphemy not because of political calculations but because His very nature has been affronted. God cannot tolerate contempt for His character and power.

Boys, young men, servants, attendants. Can denote actual youth or a subordinate status and role. When applied to high-ranking officials, it emphasizes their status as subordinates to the one who sent them.

The TCR rendering captures a crucial theological move: Isaiah dismisses the Rabshakeh's status by calling him and his companions 'servants/boys' (na'arei) of the king. While the Rabshakeh had presented himself as the authorized voice of the Assyrian king, Isaiah reduces his position to that of a mere servant or subordinate. This is both a rhetorical diminishment and a theological assertion: the true power does not lie with the servants but with the one who sent them, and above all earthly kings stands God.

The king of Assyria; in this historical context, Sennacherib, the reigning Assyrian monarch who had conquered most of the Near East and was now threatening Jerusalem.

By referring to Sennacherib as 'the king of Assyria,' Isaiah formally names the human opponent while simultaneously placing that human power in a subordinate relationship to God. The Assyrian king, for all his might, remains 'the king of Assyria' — a powerful but finite human authority. God is infinitely greater.

Wind, breath, spirit, disposition, impulse. Here it refers not to a supernatural force but to an inner inclination or emotional state that God plants within Sennacherib. The Covenant Rendering clarifies this as God putting a disposition in him—an internal motivation he will experience as his own.

The word ruach appears throughout scripture to describe both God's Spirit and human states of mind. In this context, God is not possessing Sennacherib but rather influencing his internal disposition in a way consistent with human agency and natural causation. This reflects the Old Testament's subtle theology of divine action working through human psychology.

Report, rumor, news. A word that emphasizes the act of hearing and the transmission of information rather than verified fact.

The specific report Sennacherib hears (likely about Tirhakah's advance, mentioned in v. 9) becomes the vehicle for God's will. God uses natural political intelligence to redirect the Assyrian king's attention and priorities, demonstrating that divine action and natural causation are not mutually exclusive.

To cause to fall, to strike down, to defeat. The hiphil form makes clear that God is the active agent—He will cause Sennacherib to fall by the sword.

This is not a passive death but one caused by God's direct intervention. The hiphil intensifies the promise: God Himself will bring about Sennacherib's downfall, fulfilling the word spoken here in verse 37 when Sennacherib is assassinated by his own sons.

And he returned, turned back, came back. The verb shiv/shuv indicates a change of location or direction.

The Rabshakeh's return from Jerusalem marks his failure to secure the city's surrender through intimidation. He must report back to his king, only to find Sennacherib has not waited—the campaign continues without him.
